Spring jumped out.

Its September and to many of us that means SPRING!!! Although its not officially Spring until the 23rd of September. With the change in the season comes a change in weather and with that our habits change. For the last couple of months we’ve stayed indoors and when we’re forced to leave the house we do so hurriedly because we want to get out of the cold and rain. We do our best to protect ourselves from the elements so we pile on the layers. With Spring on its way we can finally peel back a few of those layers and emerge from the cosy cocoons we’ve been wrapped up in. Temperatures are not that high so we cannot pull out the shorts just yet. With Cape Town’s weather you cant even really pack away your rain jackets yet and this Winter seems to be a stubborn one. But we can start dressing a little lighter. Now when it comes to spring we think bright colours and floral prints because we just got out of the gloomy winter. Im not someone that goes for bright colours usually but im not shy to wear a floral print.

I’m not even shy to read myself

This is what Ill be wearing this Spring…

Spring 1

It may be a bit warmer in Spring but we all know it can still get quite cold and the weather can change at anytime during the day, so I believe in carrying a jacket or a jersey with me whenever I leave the house. Its also not warm enough for shorts or flip flops and a plain white T just says Spring is here!

Spring 2.jpg

Night time is always a bit cooler than the day time so if I’m going out at night Id swop out the cardigan for a bomber jacket (told you I’m not shy). I’ve also packed away the boots and pulled out a pair of comfortable sneakers to complement the look.

Springs is on its way so let go of all the Winter stress. Lets dress to impress!

A Special buy for a special guy.

Do you believe in love at first sight?

I recently had a conversation with a friend about a shopping expedition he went on. He told me about this amazing jacket he saw and he described it to me in such detail and with so much joy. He even made me fall in love with it and I’ve never even seen it. That sparked this idea. We all have experienced that sensation once or twice in our lives. Some of us more than others. When you lay your eyes on an item in a store, magazine, online or you might even see someone else wearing it and its love at first sight. You just have to have it. You turn into a living, breathing heart eyes emoji in that moment. In your mind you can picture yourself wearing it. You already know where you want to wear it to. The price doesn’t matter. You are willing to spend anything just to have it in your closet. Sometimes you tell yourself it’s too expensive you’ll wait till it goes on sale to buy it. You keep walking into that shop just to touch it and to see if it’s still there in your size. You will drive around from mall to mall just so that you can have it. From the moment you first laid your eyes on it you think about it every day.

Remember when you were young and you used to beg your parents to buy you that expensive pair of trendy sneakers that everyone was wearing? It’s that feeling. You want it, you MUST have it, only this time around you have to buy it yourself. It’s not that you need this item of clothing. It just spoke to you and made you feel something and when you wear it you smile and you feel good and no one can tell you anything. It doesn’t even have to be something expensive or something that everybody else would love. It’s something that is uniquely you. It’s a true representation of your personal style. Its not a trend. Its something that you really want to wear regardless of what the influencers are doing. It’s a true expression of yourself.

I thought that it would be cool to include some of my own special buys and share them with you.

Camo, leather

The first time I saw this jacket, I just knew I had to have it. I was walking past Cotton On and I saw it out of the corner of my eye and I doubled back and I went into the store and took a picture and sent it to my friend and told him I had to have this jacket. Yes, this is how important clothing is to me. I will interrupt your day to talk about it. When I eventually had the money to buy it the jacket was sold out. But Superbalist came through for me and they still had it in my size.

The boots was also a Superbalist buy. I was scrolling and again I fell in love. I love brown leather boots. I buy myself a new pair every year before winter starts and these are this years pair.

The wallet I bought 4 years ago. I was coming down the escalator in Woolies in Canal Walk and the it immediately caught my attention. I call it my “man purse”. Its one of my favourite things I own.

The sunglasses I saw while I was browsing in River Island with my friend. I normally wouldn’t buy that shape because it never looks right on me. But I was drawn to the colour and when I tried them on they fit perfectly. It was a match made in heaven. I didn’t think twice about buying them.

BLACK EFFECT

I’ve been looking for a biker jacket for quite some time but I could never find the right one. There would always be something wrong with the fit or the style. But this year I eventually bumped into this one at Zara and it was EVERYTHING. Frantically I searched through the bunch of jackets on the rail for the right size and EUREKA!!

As much as I love brown leather boots I love suede sneakers. Just like the biker jacket, Ive been looking for a cool pair of all black sneakers and I just could find the right pair. I eventually scrolled past these black suede Pumas on Superbalist and immediately added to cart.

The chain I found at Topman while I was looking for a suit. Its simplicity caught my eye and I knew I had to have it. I wear it with almost anything and almost every time I go out.

Black & Yellow.jpg

Ive been going through a yellow phase lately. My eyes are immediately drawn to the colour and that’s exactly what happened when I saw this jacket. The colour just jumps out at you. I’m not normally one to wear bright colours but this one gave me one look and charmed “buy me, you know you want to” and I gave in. The rest is history.

Besides yellow I’ve also been going through a stripe phase. I saw this fine piece of fabric on a hanger in Cotton On as I was walking past and once more I was bowled over. I immediately knew how I was going to style it.

The hat was a special buy because I bought it during that time when hats was a major trend. I could never find a hat that suits me perfectly and this one was just right. I’ve had it for 3 years now and its been my go to every winter when I have to go somewhere fancy and I cannot wear a hoodie.

These Sunglasses are a recent buy and I love them. They stole my heart while I was scrolling down the Superbalist app.

Accessories.jpg

I’m a sucker for watches not to tell the time but just for the sake of accessorizing. I really love brown leather straps on a watch because I feel like it works perfectly with any outfit.

The sunglasses I saw at Duesouth while looking for something else. I didn’t buy it at first but I was thinking about them a lot the following week. The next time I got to the mall first thing I did was go grab these.

This chain I saw in a magazine. I snapped a picture of it and showed it to my friend. I told her how much I loved it but she didn’t think it was anything special. I saw it was on sale at Topman. I heard that Topman was closing down their stores here so I asked her to look for it in Canal Walk if she goes and promised to pay her back. I knew that I had to have it. She bought it and gave it to me as a gift.

These are just a few of my special buys and I already have my sights on another one.

This denim jacket has been chilling in my cart on Superbalist for weeks now and I’m so tempted to checkout but Ill wait for it to go on sale.

Many people will say they don’t care about clothes or fashion. They say its just material things and they are correct but for me it really brings pure joy to my life and lifts my spirit. Its a way for me to express who I am. It shows people who you are without saying a single word. So may our special buys keep bringing joy to our lives and continue to let our true self shine.

Allow me to introduce myself.

IMG_-gsh3ir
This is me, enjoying a sunny afternoon in my hometown Paarl.

This is only my second blog so I thought Id introduce myself. My name is Gareth my friends call me G. I was born and raised in Paarl so to the city slickers I would be seen as a farm boy. Growing up in a small town, even though it didn’t feel that small to me, is not much different from growing up in a suburb in the big city. I went to school and got the same education that city kids got. Yes, pop culture crazes and trends took some time to reach us in an age before cell phones and the internet were readily available to youngsters like today. That time we still had to wait for one of our cousins from Cape Town to come visit or for us to go visit them during the holidays to be put on to what’s hot. Other than that our experiences growing up were quite similar. The only reason I went to the big city was to visit family or go to the big malls.

After school I was privileged to further my education and study at UWC. This is where I started noticing that there was a difference between myself and city people. The first thing that I noticed was that my home language was Afrikaans and most of them spoke English which was already a big status symbol. I need to mention that I never struggled with English. I spoke English fluently and I excelled at it in School. I grew passionate about language and literature at school and came to University to pursue it further so I majored in Afrikaans en Nederlandse Studies and English Literature.

Besides my love of language and literature I discovered something else at university and that is my passion for fashion. Growing up, I never had a lot of clothes. I had my school clothes that I wore 5 days a week and I had church clothes that was only worn to church on Sundays and then I had clothes I wore at home which wasn’t a lot. I had 3 or 4 t-shirts 2 or 3 pairs of shorts and maybe 1 or 2 pairs of pants that I could wear to go somewhere nice outside the house. When I started studying I didn’t have a style. I just had to make do with the clothes I had and up until that point there was nothing wrong with my clothes to me. I just didn’t have enough to make it through a 5 day week at university. I had to ask my mother to buy me clothes for campus. I bought clothes that I thought would be cool to wear to campus. I got name brands and logos written in loud bold prints across the chest, name brand sneakers because that’s what I saw other students wearing. None of the things fit my scrawny frame at the time. It was always a struggle finding a size XS t-shirt and a size 26 pants. It just wasn’t a good look. I deleted all the evidence from Facebook. If you search long and hard on one of my friends pages you might still find a pic or two. I’m a little vain, aren’t we all?

With time I figured out what I liked to wear and what looked good on me. I started becoming an individual instead of following the crowd and wearing what everyone else wore. I started taking pride in how I dressed because people started complimenting me. I was given the nickname “Mr. Markham” by some people because they thought I dressed like a Markham mannequin which is funny because at that time I didn’t even shop at Markham because my mother didn’t have a Foschini account. At first I didn’t know how to take the compliments because I’m quite introverted and shy. My confidence started growing and my style improved a lot! So you can say its fashion that brought me out of my shell. Like I said in my previous blog, when you look good you feel good and as a result of that you feel good about yourself you become more confident.

This blog combines these two passions namely writing and fashion. I will elaborate more on my experiments with fashion, style hits and misses (which I haven’t had much of). Things like style rules I live by, my fashion essentials and more interesting things. PLEASE come back and check it out. It’s gonna be lit. I will also try to focus on other things such as music and literature. Things that I find interesting and feel necessary to give my unique take on I will share here.

Come along on this journey and engage with me.

I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!!!

Everyone that knows me, knows that I love fashion. Not so much fashion but clothes. I like to look good and receive compliments. Is that bad? For me getting dressed is quite the chore because everything down to the socks needs to be just right for me to be happy. I am my own worst critic.

I said I love looking good and to me that starts with a concept that I have in my head focused on either a specific colour, accessory or item of clothing that inspires me for that day. This might sound easy but it’s really not because there is a lot to take into consideration like what is the setting, dress code or the weather where I’m going. As a teacher I had to consider what I would be doing in class the next day. When I say “I have nothing to wear” I don’t mean I don’t have clothes it simply means that I cannot decide what to wear for that day or occasion. I’m sure we’ve all been there at some point.

I’m standing in front of my closet and I have picked out a specific shirt I want to wear, I just need to decide on pants and shoes. Sounds simple right? So now I’m looking for the right pair of pants and I cannot seem to find the pants that I want to wear that would make this look a winner. Now I hate every pair of pants that I own because I have to settle for mediocrity and I have to compromise on the perfect wash or fit of the jeans that would have made this look a standout. After going back and forth and having a mini breakdown over pants, I have finally picked a pair that will do. Then I need to decide which shoes I want to wear. I cannot wear the shoes I wanted to wear originally because they don’t go well with the pants I just chose. After settling on a pair of shoes my whole outfit has changed I now need to pick socks. I can only find the one sock of the pair I want to wear and I’m searching and searching and there’s socks everywhere. Eventually after turning my whole room into a ball of socks, with great relief I find the other sock but now I can’t seem to find the sock I had before I started searching. Then I give up and decide to wear another shirt and the process starts all over again. I envy those guys that can just throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and be out the door without giving it much thought.

There’s just something about clothing that can change your whole mood. It gives you extra confidence and every time someone smiles at you or gives you that second look and checks you out from head to toe it just makes you feel great no matter how your day is going. When I say I have nothing to wear, I really mean that there’s nothing in my wardrobe that will make me feel good or confident on that day. As the old saying goes, when you look good you feel good.

Keep the good vibes going!
